Our Lenten Journey - There was once a sea captain who in his retirement skippered a boat (taking trippers to the Shetland Islands). On one trip the boat was full of young people. These laughed at the old captain when they saw him saying prayer before setting out, for the day was fine and the sea was calm. But when out at sea a storm suddenly blew up and the boat began to pitch violently, the terrified passengers came to the captain and asked him to join them in prayer, he replied: 'I say my prayers when it's calm. When it's rough, I attend to my ship.' There is a lesson there for us. If we cannot or will not seek God in the still moment of our lives, we are not likely to find him when the storm hits. We are more likely to panic. We certainly will not hear his voice above the howling wind. But if we have learned to seek him and to trust him in the quiet moments, then most certainly we will find him when the storm comes.
