This is the last Sunday before Lent, which is celebrated as Temperance Sunday. In the Liturgy, we hear that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. True prayer will bear fruit in action. Some didactic psalms teach us how the praise of God is reflected in a virtuous life. Today's psalm takes each letter of the Hebrew alphabet to begin a verse extolling the virtues of a good life. The verse chosen today prepare us for the Lord's exhortation to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. The life of a virtuous person is a light in the darkness. Such a one is generous, merciful and just, takes pity and lends, conducts affairs with honour, is open-handed and gives to the poor. Let your light shine in the sight of people, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven. A life of virtue is a light in the darkness.

Ash Wednesday - A day of Fast and Abstinence. Fasting means that the amount of food we eat is considerably reduced. Abstinence means that we give up a particular kind of food or drink or form of amusement. Those over eighteen are bound by the law of fasting until the beginning of their sixtieth year, while all over fourteen are bound by the law of abstinence.

Q. Why are ashes used for the start of Lent? Do these ashes have special power?
A. This time last year the news carried horrific pictures of sheep reduced to ashes. Ashes are a grim reminder that nothing in this world will last forever, except for the spiritual qualities of faith, hope and love. There is no special power attached to the blessed ashes. Accepting the ashes is a statement that one is undertaking some form of penance during Lent. Penance could mean giving up something we like or resolving to improve in some area of life. Or we can take on more prayer, better reading, cutting down on television, giving more time to visiting others. Welcome Lent, a time to find again the right path, a time to reflect on the things that really matter in life. Dust we are and into dust we shall return. That day will come and when God calls us we must go, bringing only ourselves, leaving all we ever owned behind us. Eternity is a far journey. Better we travel light.
