Christmas Traditions

The tradition of placing a candle in the window of a house originated long ago when Catholic priests were forbidden to celebrate Mass. Catholic houses placed a candle in the window so that a priest passing by would know that the residents of the house were Catholic and he would be welcome to celebrate Mass in the house. Those who forbade the celebration of Mass presumed it was done for effect, and knew nothing of the sign that was passing between the laity and the clergy.

Mary, Who is at the centre of today's Gospel will help us. She is a great example. No sooner has she said her 'Yes' to God than she arose and went with haste to help her cousin Elizabeth. Her religion was not a matter of mere sentimentality. It was the expression of a genuine feeling, a feeling that she converted into deeds.
