What kind of place is purgatory?
Don't think of purgatory as a place but as a process. Don't think of purgatory as a punishment but as a journey towards perfect contemplation of God's glory. 'All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.' (Catechism #1030).
It stands to reason that a lukewarm person is not as fully prepared for the light of God as the genuinely holy person. Thank God for this opportunity to purification which we call 'purgatory'.
