Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - 23 July 2000

In the Gospel today the caring nature of Jesus is seen in his response to the apostles. They returned exhausted and hungry. Jesus tells them that they must go away and rest. We are given good insight into the kind of person Jesus is. The same care and concern for others is essential to Christian living. Without this, Christianity remains on the margins of life, becomes cold and legalistic. Maybe this Gospel might teach us how to treat others - a lesson we need to remind ourselves of. The bread which you do not use is the bread of the hungry, The garment hanging in your wardrobe is the garment of the one who is naked, The shoes that you do not wear are the shoes of the one who is barefoot, The money that you keep stored away is the money of the poor, The acts of charity that you do not perform are so many injustices that you commit.
