Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

There is an old saying that 'mission begins at home'. While mission has a universal dimension it also begins at the doorstep of our lives. In the Gospel Jesus sends his disciples out as missionaries. All of us are called by Christ to be missionary in our approach to others right here, right now. Parents live out that call by rearing their children and trying to form them in their faith. This is no mean task, a challenge today when Gospel values are in conflict with Celtic tiger values. Another way of being missionary is by the silent witness of lifestyle: an effective way of preaching the Gospel. 'Jesus has no hands on earth but yours, no feet, no eyes but yours.' All of us can be missionaries without having to leave our neighbour.

Lord, you continue to call us to be your Apostles. You look into our hearts and do not judge by appearances as we are inclined to do. Help us to try and imitate your ways.
